  English 30 Honors
English 30 was easily the most enjoyable English class I have taken my entire educational career. The course, taught by Professor Toby Thompson, focused on creative non-fiction, which is my favorite kind of work. We did not read any poems or prose or fairy tales. Instead we wrote articles. It was almost like a journalism class.

Toby, as the class called him, would have us write in the style he used when he wrote for magazines. Toby's most famous works include articles we wrote on the life of Bob Dylan.

In this class we would spend about every third Friday leaving class and observing a situation in downtown State College. Then we would have to submit a 750 word story on what we saw. Sometimes we would have to interview the people at the scene and include them in our story. Our final work was a 2,250 word essay on, what else, something we observed.

An excellent class for anyone interested in journalism, and a required course for all Schreyer Honors students, English 30 provided an excellent experience for me and helped perfect my creative non-fiction writing skills.

Class grade received: A (and Honors Credit)
