I took ESACT 117: Exercises in Stress Management for two reasons. First, it seemed like an easy way to earn my exercise credits. Secondly, I figure that once I progress into the management and executive positions I would like to hold, knowledge of some stress management techniques would be useful. Right now I am a very peaceful guy who handles his stress pretty well. So I assumed that this class would be no problem. And I was right.

The class, which was composed almost entirely of seniors, met once a week for 50 minutes and counted for 1.5 credits. Taught in the Willard Building (a building with no room to actually do any physical exercise), we basically sat in our seats all class and listened to Dr. Pfau gently tell us about ways to manage our stress and become more at peace with ourselves. In addition to two sections of ESACT 117, Dr. Pfau also teaches yoga.

We were given weekly exercises we need to complete either before class or during class. Most of the exercises had us recanting experiences that frustrated us and what we did to cope with the stress. Other times we had to draw circles, which represented a 24 hour clock, and had to mark down everything we did to show time management. Our final project had us track our daily intake of calories and fat for a week, and then develop an exercise routine around that information.

Although we did no real physical exercise in this class, nor did we actually learn any techniques to combat stress, the class was still a good way to earn 1.5 ESACT credits. It was more an introductory yoga philosophy class tied into kinesiology than a stress management class. But regardless, the class was well worth the 50 minutes a week of effort I put into it.

Class grade received: A

Classwork:

A class exercise which required us to answer three questions related to how we use our energy during the day.

A four part project: 1. A contract on how I will exercise; 2. A log of exercise activities; 3. Reflection of goal; 4. Analysis of results.
